The Executive Office (TEO) is working in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council to develop a major tourism project, the Maritime Museum on Ebrington Square. It will bring to life the city’s rich maritime heritage tracing the history of the River Foyle, the development of the port and its impact on human and social heritage through exhibitions, interpretative materials and interactive elements.
The two central themes of the museum will be emigration and the Battle of the Atlantic. The project will comprise the city archive, genealogy services and educational facilities for life-long learning.
The Maritime Museum will be housed in Building 49 (three storeys), the original site hospital dating from 1841. The Archive will be housed in Buildings 45/46 (two storeys), the former Games Room dating from 1888. Both buildings are listed.
Buildings 45/46, 49 and the new build extensions linking both buildings measure ca. 15,339 sq ft (1,425 sq m). The project is scheduled for completion in 2019.
