Ice surprise for local children as Belfast Giants drop in

10th December 2014

Derry skaters were treated to a thrilling display by some of the best skaters in the business, when two of the Belfast Giants dropped in to the Legenderry on Ice rink to show off their skills today at Ebrington Square.

Skating stars Andrew Dickson and Mark Garside showed the amateurs exactly how it’s done, as they demonstrated some of the speed skating techniques which are such a draw to their regular fans at the Odyssey.

The hockey giants received a warm welcome from local children, who got to join in the fun and pick up a few tips from the experts.

The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Brenda Stevenson, joined the skaters who gathered to see some of the chills and thrills on the ice. “We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Belfast Giants to the LegenDerry Ice Rink, which has been such a draw to the Christmas Market in Ebrington,” she said afterwards.

“There is a bit of a skating craze in the city at the moment, and the opportunity to see some of the professionals in action will certainly be an inspiration for the children who gathered to watch them today. It was extremely impressive – these guys just make it look so easy!”.

Mel Higgins, Ilex’s Chief Executive said: “It was fantastic to have Andrew and Mark from the Belfast Giants at Ebrington today.  They got a gigantic welcome as they showcased their skills to the crowd.  LegenDerry on Ice has returned to Ebrington for its second Christmas in a row, bigger and better,  attracting families from near and far to take part in the festive fun”.

Thousands flocked to the rink last year, and it continues to be a big draw for budding Dancing on Ice hopefuls this year. Legenderry on Ice is just one of a whole host of activities at the Christmas Village currently in the city, with a Festive Funfair, Christmas Market, a splendid Spiegeltent bar and Festive Film Factory also based at the Christmas Village at Ebrington Square.

And there are a whole host of events taking place at a variety of venues across the city throughout December, including pantomimes in both the Waterside Theatre and Millennium Forum, the Christmas Cinema in St Columb’s Hall on December 13, Christmas movies at the Nerve Centre December 15-19, Oíche Gheimhridh in the Glassworks on December 13 and of course the traditional Mayor’s Christmas Concert in the Guildhall on December 21.
