Cunningham Square lights up for Christmas!

16th December 2011

Ilex, the urban regeneration company yesterday switched on Christmas tree lights at Cunningham Square in Ebrington.  The festivities included carol singing organised by the Churches Trust and a specially filmed message to the crew of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, with communities from the Waterside taking part.

Sir Roy McNulty, Ilex Chairman said:

“We are delighted to join with communities in the Waterside to celebrate Christmas by switching on the lights of the first Christmas tree at Cunningham Square on Limavady Road.  The square will soon open as the pedestrian entrance to Ebrington from Dales Corner and the event marks the first public use of this new space.  It is fitting that the local community should be the first to visit Cunningham Square which will open to the public early in 2012, another significant milestone for the city after the launch of the Peace Bridge”.

Switching on the Christmas lights, the Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney said:

“It is wonderful to see the neighbouring communities join in the festivities.  While we are all enjoying Christmas at home, the Clipper crew will be braving the elements on the high seas, so we are taking this opportunity to send a special Christmas message to all of them”.

The public realm at Ebrington is due to open early 2012, allowing access from the Waterside, through Cunningham Square to the Peace Bridge.
