Local Schools Go Digital

Ilex, the urban regeneration company for Derry~Londonderry has announced the launch of The Nerve Centre’s Creative Digital Classrooms project which has seen the installation of digital media equipment and suites in 17 special and primary schools across the city.

The project, which was led by The Nerve Centre with support from Ilexand funded by the Department for Social Development and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, aims to support the delivery of Creative Access in the Digital Age, one of the ten major strands of the UK City of Culture 2013 programme and a key element in the digital strategy for 2013.

Ilex’s Cultural Broker Caoimhin Corrigan said: “This project will encourage young people from communities across the city to develop their creative abilities in digital media and gain an official ICT qualification from CCEA. It will equip them with technical skills and knowledge which will stand them in good stead for future learning, for study and eventually for the world of work. It is also another step into championing and developing our city as a creative and connected city.”

The Nerve Centre’s Director of Education John Peto said: “The Nerve Centre's Creative Digital Classrooms project has allowed us to build on over a decade of work with local primary and special schools in building digital skills and enhancing learning. The scale of this project, delivering creative hardware directly into 17 schools, with a further 5 partnership schools also involved, and for use by hundreds of young people across the Derry City Council area, allows us to use the platform of 2013 and the UK City of Culture to deliver systemic change in how our young people engage with learning and deliver a real and meaningful legacy for years to come.”

The Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland added: “The investment in this equipment will provide improved facilities for pupils and teachers and will allow children from across Londonderry the chance to develop their creative abilities and gain qualifications. The United Kingdom City of Culture year will only be a success if lasting legacies such as this are left after it is over.”
