Major Planning Awards for Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square

17th February 2012

At a prestigious ceremony in Dublin this afternoon the Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square won two National Planning Awards – the Place Making Award and the Overall Planning Award.

The Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square were entered as a single project under the Place Making category which highlights projects or buildings that are a direct result of specific planning input, projects that ensure and demonstrate improved quality of life for the community and which produce significant benefits beyond the site itself.

Aideen McGinley, Ilex’s Chief Executive said: “We are honoured to receive the Place Making award which recognises the partnership in planning the Peace Bridge and Ebrington as catalysts of the city’s regeneration. But to be also awarded the top prize in national planning is truly wonderful. This is a great “thumbs up” for everyone who worked on the planning and delivery of both projects – and a great “thumbs up” for the city!

Derry~Londonderry has developed One City One Plan One Voice for the next 10 years which will be ‘place shaping and life changing’. The Peace Bridge and Ebrington are physical manifestations of our commitment to tell a new story – how to transform a city by creating shared space. That story has relevance locally, regionally and internationally”.

The Deputy Mayor, Kevin Campbell added: “We are delighted to have represented Derry City Council at this Ceremony and to receive this award is a credit to the hard work and commitment of Ilex and their strategic partners in the construction of these landmarks. The Peace Bridge and the newly opened Ebrington Square will be followed by additional significant projects as part of One Plan in building the long term physical, economic and social regeneration of the City”.

The Irish Planning Institute’s National Planning Awards take place every two years and highlight the best examples of planning practice in the public and private sectors.

The Irish Planning Institute has now nominated the Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square to represent the Irish planning profession at the 9th European Urban and Regional Planning Achievement Awards 2012.
