Today sees the significant first anniversary of the opening of the Peace Bridge. Already in its first year, the bridge has become a new iconic symbol for the city and a destination in its own right.
Aideen McGinley, Chief Executive of Ilex said: “The Peace Bridge has captured hearts and minds, and opened up the potential of the city, for everyone to embrace developments at Ebrington and St. Columb’s Park. People who used to drive are walking and cycling to work for pleasure. The shared space has hosted key events in the city - last week’s Peace One Day concert, the Olympic Torch run, the St. Patrick’s Day Carnival amongst others - and we are delighted that so many charities are using the bridge for fund raising”.
Ilex Chairman, Matt McNulty added: “As well as changing the pattern of life in our community, the recognition we have gained on a national and international level for its design and structural excellence has been exceptional. The 750,000 crossings tell the new story the bridge represents”.
