Ilex, the urban regeneration company for Derry~Londonderry, has revealed that the total pedestrian and cycle movement on the Peace Bridge has now exceeded 1.5 million since its launch on June 25th 2011.
Interim Chief Executive of Ilex, Mel Higgins said: “This is another significant juncture and underlines what a huge success the Peace Bridge has been since it opened almost two years ago.
As well as connecting communities on either side of the city and creating access from the Cityside to Ebrington, the Peace Bridge has also become a major exercise route for people, as demonstrated within a recent survey commissioned by Ilex, which revealed that 9 out of 10 residents have used it for health and fitness purposes.
It continues to be a focal point for charity activities and has had a very positive economic impact on the city benefiting local businesses. Additionally, the Peace Bridge has helped boost the city’s ranking in influential international travel guides including Lonely Planet and is often at the top of many tourists’ wish-lists when visiting the region”.
